Are Pro-Gun Democrats Too Good to Be True?

0

It seems like a perfect world: people on the opposite side of a conversation who can actually help move the conversation forward around gun control.

Pro-gun Democrats are indeed a rare breed, but can they truly be trusted to shift the conversation towards protecting the Second Amendment rights of all Americans? While we would all like to believe that we’ve found an unexpected ally in the enemy’s camp, the reality includes a lot more shades of gray than black and white — and these shifty individuals tend to change their tune once their Democratic colleagues exert more political pressure.

Flip-Flopping Lawmakers

Democrats such as Tim Walz from Minnesota have long bragged about their positive scores with the NRA, and used this leverage to pull in funds from gun-friendly organizations. He used this rhetoric to win multiple elections in his conservative state, but suddenly flipped his stance to support gun control in less than a ten-year period.

Why this quick switch? The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida. This single unfortunate incident was enough to cause Walz to rethink his promised “lifelong support” of guns and veterans and follow the party line of anti-gun narratives. Unfortunately, this is after he gained power and prominence by promoting Second Amendment rights: a policy flip-flop that cost voters the right to have someone that they could trust protecting their freedoms.

Retracting Unpopular Views

If there’s one thing that you can be sure of, it’s that Democrats will quickly renege on unpopular views if they receive enough pressure from peers and the media. Another example is Senator Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat who used the Las Vegas shooting in October 2017 to make a statement about his move towards gun control.

This long-time supporter of the Second Amendment suddenly decided that the anniversary of the deadly shooting by a single individual was the ideal time to make public his shift in thinking. He is now calling for a ban on all assault weapons throughout the country — for everyone, not just individuals with a criminal background. He claims a lack of action by Congress, but the reality is more likely that he’s taking heat from others in his party about his formerly-conservative stance on gun control.

A Healthy Dose of Skepticism

These two instances, as well as others too numerous to mention, are part of what should lead Republicans and any individual who wants to maintain their gun rights in America to have a healthy dose of skepticism when you see a Democrat running on a platform supporting gun rights. While it would be great to think that we’re gaining headway in the arena of protecting our Second Amendment rights, the reality is much more complex — and sentiment from these lawmakers can turn on a dime.

The one thing you can be sure of is that the Democratic party will continue to pressure the few remaining brave souls who dare to shun the left-leaning narrative of limiting access to all types of weapons — especially assault weapons.
