Dick’s Sporting Goods was hit hard in the wake of the retailer’s implementation of several anti-gun policies, according to the latest available sales figures.
News of the sharp drop, first reported by Reuters, came as gun control briefly soared to the top of the headlines after a gunman opened fire at a venue hosting a video game tournament in Tallahassee, Florida. However, as Gallup polls have shown us in the past, gun control doesn’t remain a popular topic for very long.
Dick’s officials made the decision to cease the sale of “assault” rifles and any firearms to individuals under the age of 21 as part of a knee-jerk reaction to the highly politicized mass shooting in Parkland, Florida earlier in 2018. Reuters reports shares in the company fell by over 3 percent after it posted a 1.9 percent drop in annual sales. The retailer expects same-store sales to drop by as much as 4 percent by the end of the fiscal year.
Dick’s CEO Edward Stack further attributes the drop in sales to a fall in Under Armour purchases. The athletic apparel maker decided to expand its distribution to a broader range of stores. Despite all of this, Stack expects his franchise to recover in the long-term.
This is just the latest in a string of bad news for the retailer. Firearm manufacturer Springfield Armory cut all ties with Dick’s Sporting Goods after the implementation of its draconian rules in May. The company also caught some bad PR with its consumers after it was revealed that it hired Washington lobbyists to promote a left-wing gun control agenda.
It’s hard not to take pleasure in the decline of Dick’s. Considering the retailer’s longstanding silence on Second Amendment issues up until the Parkland shooting went political, its sudden concern can’t be seen as anything less than virtue signaling for media brownie points. Apparently, customer’s of the franchise had a different idea.
