Illinois Counties Declare Themselves “Sanctuaries” for Gun Owners

Pro-Second Amendment communities in Illinois are fighting back against their state’s assault on gun rights, and they’re doing it by appropriating one of the left’s favorite tactics on another issue — immigration.

Several rural counties in the state have declared themselves “sanctuaries” for gun owners, referencing legal maneuvers by large liberal cities (including Chicago) to resist the federal government on enforcing national immigration law.

The move is largely symbolic, but it does make a strong statement against the state of Illinois’ crackdown on Second Amendment rights.

Chicago is among the worst cities in the United States in terms of violent crime. Despite the city being famous for its aggressive gun control policies, a staggering amount of the violent crimes committed in the area involve firearms. The city was the site of over 650 homicides in 2017 alone.

The decision by the rural counties to provide a sanctuary for gun owners reflects the deep divide over gun culture in the state. Residents living in rural countries are more likely to be familiar with firearms, and often use them for hunting and sporting purposes. Consequently, they are more likely educated on their practical use for self defense. Residents in large cities such as Chicago, on the other hand, typically blame homicide rates on firearm accessibility, despite the fact that guns are much harder to come by where they live.
