NRA Applauds Senate Vote to Confirm Brett Kavanaugh
The National Rifle Association released a statement over the weekend praising the U.S. Senate for confirming Judge Brett Kavanaugh to serve on the Supreme Court.
Kavanaugh will succeed the outgoing Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his departure from the nation’s highest court over the summer. His confirmation follows weeks of tense political debate after Democratic senators pressed the nominee over unverified allegations of sexual assault. Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell motioned to move forward with the vote after investigators failed to uncover any evidence of sexual misconduct.
The NRA, the largest Second Amendment advocacy group in the United States, celebrated Kavanaugh’s confirmation as a victory for gun rights in the country.
“On behalf of our nearly six million members, the NRA congratulates Brett Kavanaugh on his confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court,” NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris Cox said in a statement. “Kavanaugh is an eminently qualified jurist who will interpret the Constitution as the framers intended. He respects our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms for self-defense.”
Cox went on to extol praise to other political actors involved, including President Donald Trump and Republican Senators.
“The NRA would like to thank President Trump for fulfilling his campaign promise to nominate pro-Second Amendment justices to the Supreme Court,” Cox added. “The selections of Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh demonstrate President Trump’s unwavering support for our fundamental right to self-defense.”
Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Senate by a 50-48 vote, with lawmakers voting almost entirely along party lines. Although Kavanaugh’s seventh FBI background investigation failed to corroborate any of the allegations levied by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who said Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in high school, Democrats held firm against the judge’s confirmation.
As a conservative textualist, there is good reason to believe Kavanaugh will be a positive voice on the high court. Strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution has always upheld the sanctity of the Second Amendment.
