CVS Health joined a growing list of retailers in requesting customers to leave their guns at home.
In a statement published on Twitter, the convenience store chain said it updated its store policies as part of what it says is an effort to fight gun violence. Apparently, ensuring a disarmed location will make the place safer…
“We support the efforts of individuals and groups working to prevent gun violence, and continually review our policies and procedures to ensure our stores remain a safe environment,” the statement read.
Uniformed law enforcement officers will still be allowed to carry their firearms when visiting CVS locations, but other law-abiding citizens will not.
The news follows a chain of reactions — most notably from retail giant Walmart — in disallowing customers from exercising their Second Amendment rights on location. Walmart in particular banned its customers from open carry, but CVS took it a step further: no guns are allowed in the stores at all.
Retailers like CVS Health and Walmart are reacting to a string of mass shootings reported in the late summer of 2019. These include a shooting a Walmart in Texas by a gunman with white supremacist ties, and another in Ohio who’s motives weren’t entirely clear.
Politicians, most notably Democratic presidential candidates, have reworked their campaigns to focus more on gun control since the incidents took place. Beto O’Rourke, a second to third-tier candidate, has clarified that his administration would confiscate semi-automatic weapons if he is elected. Beto trails far behind frontrunner and former Vice President Joe Biden, who has been less clear on his position. Biden has, however, paid at least minimal lip service in supporting additional gun control.
