Campus Concealed Carry: What You Need to Know NOW

Most college campuses in American do not allow firearms of any kind on school grounds, but there are some states that do. If you are entering college as a freshman or to continue your education as an adult, you might want to look into going to a school that permits the concealed carry of your firearm.

Just recently at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, a gunman killed two people and injured two others. People have a right to feel safe where they go to school, and the best way to do that is to ensure that students have the means to defend themselves if they have to.

States That Allow Concealed Carry On Campus

The states that allow students and faculty to carry their firearms on campus in the south are Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia. The midwest is Kansas, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Out west, you have Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. There aren’t any schools in the northeast that allow guns on campus.

So, that rules out some big schools in the New York and Massachusetts area if you want to protect yourself on campus.

Some States Allow The Schools To Set Policy

There are some states that allow the schools themselves to set the policy on concealed carry. Contact each school specifically to find out if your potential school is one that might allow it. Other states allow you to keep your firearm in your locked car while you are in class on campus.

It’s very easy to look at exactly how the laws are interpreted by each state. If you have any questions about a specific college or university, it’s better to go directly to the school’s website where their policy should be listed.

Campus Carry is the Future

Pro-gun activists are looking to support people’s Second Amendment rights. The NRA is firmly behind this movement to allow concealed carry on college campuses.

Missouri is one state that is currently looking to approve concealed carry on campuses by passing House Bill 575 in April. Many people think it’s vital to let individuals make that choice for themselves, and it seems like more states are looking to pass these types of bills with the full support of the NRA behind some of these state initiatives.

Keep in mind that most violence dealing with college students, according to statistics, takes place off campus. 93 percent of those crimes involving college students do not happen on school grounds. Kansas is one of those states that has recently in the past few years allowed concealed carry on campus, and they have found that crime rates have actually gone down. The University of Kansas police department said crime went down by 13 percent in 2017 compared to the year before.

Considering this, it’s fair to say that gun owners are on the winning side.
