NRA Vows to Continue Fighting Gun Control

0

The National Rifle Association has renewed its commitment to continue fighting gun control and standing up for the Second Amendment despite being hit with a wave of mainstream media hit pieces.

In a column published in the NRA’s blog Americas1stfreedom, the association’s Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre addressed these media attacks directly. In it, he promised members and rank-and-file gun owners alike that his organization will not surrender to gun-grabbing politicians and activists.

“In the nearly four decades I’ve been helping the NRA defend our freedom, I’ve never seen the national media consistently tell the truth about our Association and our Second Amendment,” he wrote. “But gun owners—and the freedom we fight to preserve—have never been as savagely attacked as during the past year.”

LaPierre has been particularly vocal in recent months as the NRA and other high-profile supporters of the Second Amendment have been likened to the worst of the worst by the press. Alongside NRA Spokesperson Dana Loesch, LaPierre has been accused of simply not caring about victims of mass shootings, and more concerned with how to somehow cash in on such tragic incidents.

NRA officials have been presented as the villains in the media’s war against the Second Amendment, with a small band of ill-informed students from Parkland, Florida being cast as the infallible heroes. As victims of a violent crime involving a firearm, these students have been rightfully given a voice to address their grievances. However, their role in this important conversation has far exceeded a healthy contribution to the debate on gun rights. Now, people like David Hogg are being used as clubs against anyone with the wrong opinion — and the media freely allows them to get away with it.

In his column, LaPierre correctly points out that this is about much more than gun control legislation. If anti-gun activists succeed in tampering down and eventually eliminating the Second Amendment from the U.S. Constitution, political actors with an authoritarian bend will become far more powerful than they have ever been.

“We face a well-orchestrated, coordinated, deliberate effort to demean and diminish the NRA and regulate our freedom out of existence,” he continues. “You see, the national news media have been taken over by a new wave of European-style socialists who don’t believe in our constitutional freedom or free-market capitalism. These are the principles that have made America the greatest nation on Earth.”

LaPierre went on to say that the NRA may in fact be the only lobby group capable of fighting off these authoritarian voices, and doubled down on his intent to use the group’s resources for doing just that.

“No matter how hard the national news media try to bully and cow us into submission, NRA members will never, ever waver in defense of the individual liberty of every single law-abiding American,” LaPierre added.

The National Rifle Association is the largest pro-gun lobby group in the United States, and can trace its beginnings to the end of the Civil War — when the group helped arm an educate recently freed blacks against their would-be oppressors. LaPierre has been working as the group’s executive vice president since 1991.
