Everyone who shoots understands the value of guns, and typically understands the need to own more than one. Although your conceal carry weapon will double as a home defense pistol, it likely doesn’t serve the same needs you expect for watching over your house and family.

Likewise, a home defense rifle isn’t typically the best choice for hunting, and a hunting rifle isn’t going to work during quail season or for shooting skeet. Then there are likely to be some guns you have an opportunity to purchase which are simply beautiful pieces, whether you admire the fine craftsmanship or the artful decorative touches. Whether you wind up with multiple guns through design or necessary accumulation, you have a collection and will want to continue to add to it over time.

Determine Your Reason for the Collection

There are plenty of reasons to begin collecting guns, some of which may not seem like a means toward a formal collection. Versatility is a common reason, as you need different self defense weapons for daily chores around town,traveling and staying in hotels, working in the yard, or relaxing inside in the evening. Practicality is another reason, as different target shooting events and hunting trips require different guns. Historic collections are always going to be popular as they can demonstrate how firearms evolved and include certain rare guns which most people have only read about.

Don’t forget guns as an investment either, as they tend to hold their value against inflation and when properly chosen, can be quick to sell should an unexpected need arise.

Understanding Gun Collectability and Value

Once you have the guns you need and begin to purchase guns you want to build an organized collection, it is important to understand which guns really are collectible. Obviously, the first rule is that if you like a particular gun it is collectible to you, but some guns are going to make for a more impressive collection. Popular gun styles which are common in America are not usually the best additions. Rare guns, especially ones no longer being manufactured, are almost always going to be a popular addition to your gun safe, or gun room if you’re fortunate. You’ll also want to take your time when purchasing.

Make sure you really want a particular gun in your collection, then do the required research to make sure you’re getting a reasonable deal on the purchase so you’ll actually add value to your collection.

Have Fun and Enjoy Your Collection

The most important rule of gun collecting is to enjoy what your doing. Even if a gun isn’t your favorite or go-to weapon, take the time to clean it and shoot it. Do a bit of research to see if any famous people were linked to any of the gun styles you have, or if they were used for a specific role in a particular war. Take the time to go look at other guns, or at collections which might be much different than yours as the collector has different goals, and never discount the idea of a fair trade. By following all these simple rules, your bound to enjoy collecting and watch how your collection grows over the course of your life.
