President Donald Trump disturbed many American gun rights activists when he appeared to signal support for a ban on suppressors during an interview with British media.
The interview came during the President’s trip to the United Kingdom, where world leaders primarily from European states gathered to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. While there, President Trump made the rounds on British media, including an appearance on the popular news program Good Morning Britain.
Speaking to presenter Piers Morgan, who was once a television personality in the United States before moving back to his native Britain, Trump was asked about how the administration plans to curb gun violence in America.
Gun ownership is all but extinct in the United Kingdom. And while it’s true that gun-related crimes are relatively low in the country, violent crimes involving knives and other weapons — including homemade firearms or similar devices — have skyrocketed in recent years. Morgan famously called called for British-style gun control during his tenure as a news presenter in the United States.
Trump’s answers to Morgan’s questions are receiving mixed reactions. While he did in fact voice support for the Second Amendment as an American tradition and constitutional protection, he also touted his support for the bump stock ban enacted earlier in his presidency. When asked about how he feels about silencers and suppressors, he responded by saying “I don’t like them.”
At this point, it’s unclear if any of the President’s statements amount to calls for additional legislation in America.
The President’s attitude during his interview with Morgan sharply contrasts more recent statements on the topic. During his address at the National Rifle Association’s annual conference just last month, he famously tore up a document featuring the United Nations’ attempted overhaul of small arms deals.
